Alatau City
Alatau City is located in the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan, between Almaty and Konaev. The concept for the city's development provides for four districts containing business, educational, industrial and tourism facilities. A mixed-use complex, Iconic Complex, is being created in the Gateway District business district.
Where Alatau City Is Located
Alatau City is being developed along the Almaty–Konaev highway, which forms part of the Western Europe – Western China international transit corridor. The area designated for the development of the city is approximately 88,000 hectares.
How Alatau City Will Develop
The concept for the city identifies four districts. Each has its own principal direction of development:

Alatau City will become a platform for the development of new technology sectors, including urban air mobility and unmanned systems. Among the planned areas of activity are passenger transport by air taxi and the use of drones for cargo delivery and for servicing urban infrastructure.
Gateway District: the Future Business Centre
Iconic Complex will be located in Gateway District. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is developing the architecture of the complex and is participating in the planning of the surrounding business district.
The concept provides for pedestrian streets, green boulevards and public squares. The transport plans include a high-speed railway and light rail transit. The launch dates have not yet been announced.
Special Legal Regime
A special legal regime has been established for Alatau City, enshrined in the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On the Special Legal Regime of the City of Alatau”. It defines the specific features of the city's governance and the conditions for its development.
Investor support is provided by the Alatau City Authority. The organisation assists with matters relating to the siting of projects, the obtaining of permits and the completion of public-sector procedures on a one-stop-shop basis.
The Role of Iconic Complex in the New City
Iconic Complex is conceived as an architectural landmark of Gateway District. Upon completion, Tower T2, 272 metres in height, will become the tallest building in the south of Kazakhstan.
The complex provides offices, apartments, a hotel and a shopping centre. The central square will unite the buildings and create a public space for residents, employees of companies and visitors to Alatau City.
